After Yearbook Photos Go Viral, Teen Becomes CoverGirl's 1st CoverBoy

Wednesday Oct 12, 2016

Last month, high school student James Charles became an Internet sensation when his yearbook photos went viral.

The story behind the pics? Charles, 17, was unhappy with his original snaps and decided to re-shoot them with improved lighting, resulting in some fiercely over-the-top photos.

"I do love being extra," he told BuzzFeed at the time. "I'm actually a pretty reserved person, I promise. When I say I'm extra it usually just comes to my makeup looks being extravagant, and I'm also never afraid to drag a local boy when he's being rude on Twitter."

It looks like Charles' re-shoots paid off - big time.

Katy Perry, CoverGirl ambassador, took to Instagram Tuesday and revealed the company signed Charles as the first-ever CoverBoy.

"Just wrapped another great CoverGirl shoot," the pop star wrote. "Honored to have the pleasure to announce the very first CoverBoy, James Charles!"

Charles, a makeup artist based in New York, will star in CoverGirl's new mascara campaign "So Lashy," which will debut later this month, USA Today reports.

"I am so honored and excited to be working with such an iconic brand," he wrote on his Instagram, which touts more than 503,000 followers. "I started my Instagram one year ago to inspire others and as an artistic outlet to challenge myself creatively. I truly hope that this shows that anyone and everyone can wear makeup and can do anything if you work hard."
