Twitter Claps Back at Diane Warren's 'Shade' of Beyoncé Song
Diane Warren sent out a skeptical tweet Beyoncé fans took as shading the superstar's new album, and clapbacks followed.
The Hollywood Reporter detailed that Warren, 65, tweeted on Aug. 1: "How can there be 24 writers on a song?" She included an "eye-rolling" emoji with the tweet.
"This isn't meant as shade, I'm just curious," Warren followed up.
But Beyoncé aficionados took umbrage, thinking the tweet was calling into question the songwriting credits for "one of her songs, 'Alien Superstar,' which features over 20 writers on the credits due to the use of samples and interpolations," THR said. The track is one of the 16 featured on "Renaissance," Beyoncé's seventh studio album, which was released July 29.
Warren sent out another tweet to add: "Ok, it's prob samples that add up the ammount of writerrs."
But the clapback frenzy had already begun.
Warren responded to a couple of the replies to her tweet, including one response from Beyoncé collaborator The-Dream.
Meanwhile, some Twitter users came to Warren's defense.
A few took the moment to try starting broader conversations.
"Warren, who has also previously worked with Beyoncé and credited as the songwriter for her song 'I Was Here,' later issued an apology for her initial tweets, explaining that she 'meant no disrespect' to the singer," THR added.
