Nick Adams Wouldn't Mind Being "The Broad Of Broadway"

Kevin Mark Kline READ TIME: 3 MIN.

Nick Adams, who is known in some circles as the "Bod of Broadway," took some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions outside the Palace Theater, home to "Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert." Nick was wearing a tank which was showing off his big guns and he confessed to me that he wouldn't mind being the 'Broad of Broadway' for as long as the "Priscilla" runs.

MK: I am here with Nick Adams who is known as the 'Bod of Broadway'. And is also very talented in his latest role Felicia in "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." Thanks for joining us, appreciate it. I wanted to find a little bit more about what got you into this particular role?

Adams: Uh, well, I've been living in New York for the last six years. This is my sixth Broadway show and when I heard they were bringing this show to Broadway I just knew that this was going to be my role.

MK: I couldn't picture anyone playing the part of Felicia more than you.

Adams: Thanks. Well, there's a lot of people in the city that I think have great bodies. But it was a lot more that went into putting the show together than just that. So it's a very demanding role, really, you know, a physical, athletic show. And it requires a lot of all of us. So it's a good time.

MK: And you did "La Cage" just before this?

Adams: Right. I left "La Cage" to start rehearsals for this a year ago on Thursday, this coming Thursday.

MK: Happy Anniversary!

Adams: Thanks.

MK: You also did Mary Sunshine over in "Chicago" on the international tour. So were you interested in drag prior to that?

Adams: Never.

MK: So you've pretty much created a niche for yourself. What kinds of roles do you see yourself doing more of?

Adams: I mean, I'm an actor, so I like to do anything really that's challenging. And, you know, I never had any interest in drag really before doing this show. I actually didn't want to do "La Cage." I didn't like the musical and my agents persuaded me to go in and audition for it. And it ended up being an incredible experience. And it was very successful. So I'm really happy that I got to do that. It was great training for this show.

MK: Now how did you train to get into the heels?

Adams: I just put them on and started to go.

MK: That's really all?

Adams: Yeah.

MK: I heard that the costume designer for "Priscilla" is the same one who is the Oscar winning costume designer of the film.

Adams: Mm-hmm. Amazing. I mean I think the costumes are fantastic. I've never seen anything like them before in a Broadway show. And the audience goes wild for them every night. They're definitely challenging to move around and to perform in. But I think it's definitely worth it. They're really beautiful.

MK: When you are in the silver shoe and you move rather closely to wards the audience... did that make you nervous?

Adams: Uh, not really. I feel pretty safe up there. I trust our crew, and our technical designers, that I'm not going to have any mishaps. But yeah, it's pretty exciting. It goes out over the first ten rows or so. I can lean over the side and see them. So it's a really beautiful moment in the show and I'm really glad they made that moment happen on stage, being able to transfer it from the movie.

MK: Wonderful. You're from Erie, Pennsylvania. What was it like growing up in Pennsylvania?

Adams: Erie's a beautiful place. I had a great time. There's actually a really large arts community there. So I had a lot of outlets to explore acting and theatre. And it's a great place to go visit. I couldn't live there now in my adulthood, but my parents are still there, and so I love to go back and keep in touch with my roots.

MK: I've also seen you in some TV and film work. I saw you in the "Englishman from New York."

Adams: Thank you. I had a great time.

MK: How long will you be with the show?

Adams: As long as it runs? So get your tickets. (Chuckle)
