Dallas Disoriented Comedy Stages All-Asian Female (and Trans) Show

On Thursday, May 7 in Dallas comes Disoriented Comedy, the first-ever nationally-touring stand-up comedy showcase featuring the diverse voices of Asian-American female-identified comics and those who love them! Featured comics include Jenny Yang, Atsuko Okatsuka, Yola Lu and transgender comedian D'Lo.

"Touring with Disoriented Comedy is like taking a family trip, except everyone is funny and no one is asking 'are we there yet,'" said Yang. "If there are human beings in the South who love to laugh and understand the English language, we will get along just fine."

Yang is a Los Angeles-based writer and stand up comedian who produces the first-ever (mostly) female, Asian American standup comedy tour, Dis/orient/ed Comedy and has been a writer and performer on the viral Buzzfeed videos "If Asians Said the Stuff White People Say" (over 8 million views), "What if Adults had Tantrums Like Toddlers?" and the "Ask An Asian" video series.

She loves how comedy allows her to say what she wants and connect with her people. Okatsuka echoed this sentiment, saying, "nothing makes me happier than making people laugh and sharing stories with people!"

Okatsuka said that she hoped that the show would touch pockets of Asian-Americans who live in the South, and may not get to see their people onstage often.

Okatsuka is a writer, standup comedian, and actress based in Los Angeles. Her comedic acting has been featured in Fred Armisen ("SNL" "Portlandia") and MOCAtv's "Ambiance Man" web series. She co-wrote and starred in both of Director Mike Ott's feature award-winning films, "LiTTLEROCK" (2010) and "Pearblossom Hwy" (2012) and is an associate shorts programmer at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

They will be joined by Yola Lu, a standup comedian and Seattle, Washington native who is currently active in the indie comedy scene in Austin, Texas. Her sketch comedy and standup comedy has been featured at Bumbershoot Comedy and Music Festival, and the Bridgetown Comedy Festival.

Also joining the ladies is D'Lo, a queer transgender Tamil Sri L.A.nkan-American, political theatre artist/writer, director, comedian and music producer based in Los Angeles, California. D'Lo has performed and/or facilitated performance and writing workshops extensively (U.S., Canada, UK, Germany, Sri Lanka and India). D'Lo is also the creator of the "Coming Out, Coming Home" writing workshop series, which have taken place with South Asian and/or Immigrant Queer Organizations nationally (LA, NY and SF).

"Comedy is how some of us survive the harshness of life. And while it helps lighten things up, and allows me to poke fun at the absurdities in this world, I kinda get off on making people laugh. Not in a sexual way," said D'Lo.

D'Lo noted that being the only guy on tour has only made things extra special, noting, "What's not to love about funny Asian-American women and a trans guy?"
