Openly gay producer and talk show personality Andy Cohen explained that his children "didn't sign up for" the kind of exposure that he gets in detailing his decision not to show their faces in his social media posts, People Magazine reports.
"The last time I showed Ben's face" in a social media post, Cohen said in a wide-ranging interview with Today, "was when I got my star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame."
Ben, at four years of age, is the older of Cohen's two children.
"And Lucy, I'm teetering towards not showing anymore," Cohen went on to add, referencing his 19-month-old daughter. "I just feel funny about it.
"People need to understand that my kids are not me," the "Watch What Happens Live" host added, "and they didn't sign up for this."
His choice as a father was informed by input from an incontestable source: His mother.
"My mom is really on me about it," Cohen said. "She's really like, 'You have to stop.'
"She was very vocal about it. 'OK you can't show Ben anymore. When are you going to stop showing Lucy?'," the "Real Housewives" producer added.
Today noted that Cohen is a phenomenally busy force in showbiz, "overseeing SiriusXM's 'Radio Andy,' co-hosting CNN's 'New Year's Eve Live' specials and [appearing in] a recent cameo on 'American Horror Story: Delicate.' That's all in between having authored five books throughout his career.
"And he doesn't just keep himself busy, but the news cycle, too," the Today article noted. "A seemingly innocuous sentence from Cohen can spark headlines. Recently, a cursory Google search featured dueling headlines: 'Andy Cohen Asks CNN to Allow Alcohol for New Year's Eve Broadcast' and 'Andy Cohen Spills the Tea About His Sex Life and Being a "Daddy".'"
It's no wonder that Cohen would want to set boundaries between his home life and the public. In his comments to Today he discussed the treacherous landscape of social media, at one point contrasting its troll-filled digital environs with the simple love he receives from his kids.
"If I go on Twitter at any given moment," People quoted Cohen telling Today, "it's a battlefield about politics, or people telling me that I messed up completely, or that I'm this, that, or the other.
"But Ben today: I was like, 'Ben, I love you.' And he goes, 'However many stars there are in the sky is how much I love you.' And I'm set for the day," Cohen said.
"I don't give a fuck what anyone's saying about me on Twitter. This little boy loves me for as many stars as there are? The rest doesn't really matter!"
