Streaming Queer: August 2024

Andrea Marks Joseph READ TIME: 13 MIN.

This month's streaming offering has humor, horror, and hot queer sex on screen. If you weren't able to see "Interview with the Vampire" on AMC+ and "Love Lies Bleeding" in cinemas (or simply need a rewatch!), now's your chance. We've got a queer celeb-filled slumber party hosted by Monét X Change; a Broadway performer brings us along for the emotional, inspiring renovation of his historical home; and a documentary about the history of a gay bar in Iowa.

We reunite with shows like fashion and gossip extravaganza "Emily in Paris," tense, steamy finance drama "Industry," and quirky murder mystery "Only Murders in the Building." "The Umbrella Academy" returns for its final season, "Riverdale" star KJ Apa is back on screen as a biker with a buzzcut, and queer athletes are shining bright at the Olympics on Peacock. There's all this and so much more to tune in for in August. Happy streaming!

"Love Lies Bleeding"

This twisted, messy, sweaty and superqueer Kristen Stewart-starring film introduced us to out actor Katy O'Brian. Lou (Stewart) is a gym manager who falls hard for ambitious bodybuilder Jackie (O'Brian), who is passing through town on her way to a competition in Las Vegas. What follows is a "blood-soaked revenge story" where the explosive combination of Lou's criminal family and her relationship with Jackie inspires a string of increasingly violent acts. The film serves body horror and slasher vibes on a hot, queer platter.

"Love Lies Bleeding" is now streaming on Max.

"The Last American Gay Bar" Season 1

This docu-series explores the role of gay bars in the lives of queer elders who were finding themselves and realizing their queerness in the '70s while they were being drafted into the Vietnam War. The show focuses on the community they found, the devastation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the '80s, and the impact of the cultural changes on these openly gay men since then. "The Last American Gay Bar" is the story of Iowa's legendary Blazing Saddle, the community that built it, and the community that grew because of it.

"The Last American Gay Bar" Season 1 is now streaming on OUTtv. The first episode is available to stream on the OUTtv Youtube channel.

"Breaking New Ground" Season 1

"Breaking New Ground" is an emotional, inspiring home renovation show with an important story at the heart of it. Honoring a 200-year-old home by breathing new life into it while maintaining as much of its original detail as possible, Broadway performer and choreographer Robert Hartwell shares the heartwarming history of his family, the history of America, and the story of his life as a Black, queer creative.

We follow as Robert reflects on the monumental fact that he owns a home that in very recent history he would not have been allowed to step into. We see him learn about the secret back entrances traveled frequently by slaves who are recorded in the home's logbook with tally-marks and no names. This is "a renovation story that celebrates the resilience of Robert`s journey, as well as those who came before him." The show combines local cultural history and joyful home renovation adventures, as Robert and his team work with the intention to fill the house with color and joy.

"Breaking New Ground" Season 1 is now streaming on Max.

"Monét's Slumber Party" Season 1

The queer chaos and laughter-filled shenanigans of "Monét's Slumber Party" is exactly what you'd imagine an adult sleepover with all your favorite queer celebs would be like. In each episode, magnificent drag queen Monét X Change hosts a handful of hilarious people who are down for whatever fun she has planned. They spend the episodes asking each other questions, playing slumber party games, and offering the audience a fun moment of escapism. There are guest stars galore, including Joel Kim Booster, Adam Rippon, and fellow drag queens Kim Chi, Jujubee, and Bob the Drag Queen.

"Monét's Slumber Party" Season 1 is now streaming on Dropout TV.

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

Athletes from around the world are competing in 39 different sports, including skateboarding, surfing, fencing, swimming, track & field, and basketball. Tune in for the hot athletes, stay for their stories of lifelong commitment to get to this moment and the magic of seeing queer Olympians demonstrating their elite athleticism. There's an endless sea of sports events streaming every day, right up until the event's Closing Ceremony on Sunday, August 11.

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics is now streaming on Peacock.

"One Fast Move"

Wes Neal ("Riverdale" star KJ Apa with a buzzcut, stubble, and muscles that are on display throughout the R-rated film's training montages) is a "troubled" young man who seeks out his estranged father (Eric Dane, "Euphoria"), a legendary moto-racer, for support in his plan to make his passion for racing into a legit professional career. With a motorcycle store owner's help, Wes "begins to dismantle the emotional barriers built by his father's absence." Out actress Maia Reficco ("Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin") plays Wes' love interest, Camila.

"One Fast Move" premieres August 8 on Prime Video.

"The Umbrella Academy" Season 4

"So the world's ending again, huh?" The final season of "The Umbrella Academy," the series based on the comic books by queer icon Gerard Way, will have six episodes, unlike the previous seasons which had 10. This season follows the Hotel Oblivion showdown that happened at the end of Season 3. The Hargreeves siblings' timeline has reset, and they have since scattered and lost their powers. They will have to learn to look out for themselves in a new way, risk everything to reunite, and win against villains old and new to save the world. We're of course looking forward to seeing out actor Elliot Page as Viktor, as well as nonbinary queer character Klaus (Robert Sheehan).

"The Umbrella Academy" Season 4 premieres August 8 on Netflix.

"Industry" Season 3

The toxic workplace drama about detrimental levels of ambition and messy sexual tension is back! After wrecking any relationships she had at Pierpoint, including the one that was keeping her most valuable secret, we have no idea how Harper (Myha'la) is going to claw her way back into a finance job. But she's not the only one in a desperate situation: Robert (Harry Lawtey) remains pathetic as ever, but he's gaining professional confidence, while Yasmin (Marisa Abela) is dealing with the devastating consequences of confronting her father, becoming the public face of his embezzlement scandal, and being denied the privileges he afforded her.

Unfortunately, it looks like gay character Gus (David Jonsson) left the show when he left the country at the end of Season 2, but we're certain there will be no shortage of queer energy sizzling through the screen amidst the young, hot finance teams facing near-constant manipulative power trips. This season's new investor, Sir Henry Muck, leads a green tech energy company, and is played by "Game of Thrones" star and shirtless "Slave Play" actor Kit Harington.

"Industry" Season 3 premieres August 11 on Max.

"Emily in Paris" Season 4, Part 1

Season 4 sees Emily (Lily Collins) trying to move on from the tangled web of secrets and lies that was her romantic life in Season 3 (and every other season, tbh). Feeling ready for a fresh start and seeing the city in a new light, she finds herself being distracted by all the hot men she's surrounded by in Paris (a relatable queen).

We're thrilled that gorgeous British love interest Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) is still in the picture, as is hot chef Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), who is expecting a baby with his ex, Camille (Camille Razat). Camille spent last season engaged in a passionate affair with an artist named Sofia, and it looks like the sapphic romance is very much still in the picture for this season. Out actor Rupert Everett joins this season as an old friend of Emily's boss, Sylvie. Everett plays Giorgio Barbieri, the owner of a global interior design firm based in Rome, who makes it his business to know everyone else's business, and to be the life of every party.

"Emily in Paris" Season 4 Part 1 premieres August 15 on Netflix. Part 2 is five more episodes which will drop on September 12.

"Bel-Air" Season 3

"Everything has a little more kick to it this season; the colors are more vibrant, the sound is elevated, the cinematography is more immersive. The vibe really sets the tone for Will's first 'Bel-Air' summer: Three months to shine, explore and make moves under the LA sun," says "Bel-Air" executive producer and director Morgan Cooper.

This season Will Smith (Jabari Banks) and Carlton Banks (Olly Sholotan) get a summer job at a country club, but Will is not gonna let the job prevent him from leaning into his plans of leveling up and coming into his own. We're hoping that summer spirit brings a romance for Ashley (Akira Akbar), who is queer and out to her sister, Hilary (Coco Jones). This season will have a guest appearance by Joseph Marcell, who played the family's butler, Geoffrey, on the '90s hit sitcom that inspired this show.

"Bel-Air" Season 3 premieres August 15 on Peacock.

"Interview with the Vampire" Season 1

If you've missed out on the glorious, compelling, queer as hell vampire tale that is "Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire" because you didn't have AMC+, now is your time to shine. This spectacular reimagining of the iconic books is coming to Netflix.

This series does not shy away from its bloodthirsty queerness, nor the seductive energy of the story. Set in New Orleans and Dubai, "Interview with the Vampire" tackles race, power, and the theatrics of immortality. Gay sex, gay drama, and gay vampires are front and center here, none of it relegated to the sidelines or subtext. Jacob Anderson is magnificent as Louis de Pointe du Lac, Sam Reid is magnetic as Lestat de Lioncourt, and Eric Bogosian is brilliant as the journalist doing the titular interviewing.

"Interview with the Vampire" Season 1 premieres August 19 on Netflix.

"Only Murders in the Building" Season 4

The final moments of "Only Murders" Season 3 revealed the show's next murder victim: Charles' (Steve Martin) longtime stunt double, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch). Sazz went into Charles' apartment while dressed just like him, and was shot in the chest by a bullet that came flying through his window. She began writing something on the kitchen floor with her blood, before the screen cuts to black, and we're certain the quirky trio of amateur detectives – bisexual character Mabel (Selena Gomez), former TV-detective Charles (Steve Martin), and theater director Oliver (Martin Short) – will completely misunderstand in spectacular, wildly entertaining fashion before suddenly getting to the heart of the mystery.

Recent Oscar winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph returns in her role as an actual police detective, and Meryl Streep returns as Loretta Durkin, the love interest to Oliver (played by her rumored real-life love, Martin Short). Season 4's exciting new cast includes Molly Shannon, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Melissa McCarthy. In another exciting twist, the trio's murder mystery podcast is being adapted into a movie this season, so there's a trip to Hollywood in between their investigations before returning to their murder-laden apartment building, The Arconia.

"Only Murders in the Building" Season 4 premieres August 27 on Hulu.
