Adrienne R. Benton of Roxbury was appointed to Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders' (GLAD) Board of Directors at its Sept. 20 board meeting.

Benton, whose professional background includes experience in healthcare management, design/build consulting and the technology software development industries, has a history of civic involvement. She has served on the boards of the Boston Coalition of Black Women, the Lena Park Community Development Corporation, and Men of Color Against AIDS, and on advisory boards at Bank Boston/Fleet Bank and the Fenway Community Health Board of Visitors. Benton holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Alabama Birmingham and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University.

"I have served on a number of local and regional boards," Benton said in a Dec. 3 press release announcing her appointment, "and GLAD presents me with the opportunity to participate in an organization that is making a positive impact on a national level to secure equal rights for, not only the GLBT community but, for people suffering from the inequities in our system of healthcare delivery."

"We are excited to welcome Adrienne to GLAD's board of directors," said GLAD Executive Director Lee Swislow. "Her broad range of professional experience and her deep commitment to LGBT rights and to the rights of people living with HIV will be an incredible asset to the board."
