Some color in your night

Still recovering from partying on New Year's Eve? DJ Joseph Colbourne has a prescription: "A little hair of the dog don't hurt!" Colbourne is turning First Night into First Week by throwing a New Year-themed dance party at The Milky Way this weekend.

The out DJ has quickly become a party expert since he started spinning in 2003. Favoring a fun retro sound, he specializes in disco. But don't think Saturday Night Fever. A Colbourne set will range from classic Philly soul to 80s funk to obscure European dance hits (Italodisco, he calls it.) Whether pulling out an old boogie classic or sharing a Eurovision runner-up, the DJ's aim is not to show off his mastery of musical history; he just wants to hit you with songs that are surprising but completely irresistible.

"People really are craving something simple, joyous and fun," he says. "They want to get lost in the music, and reward themselves for all the hard work they do all day."

Colbourne's fun formula is working. He's played many venues around town, been written up in the Weekly Dig and received props from the Phoenix, and he's been a resident DJ at The Milky Way since May. The first Friday of every month he lays down the disco at COLOR, so named for its vibrant energy. Checking out this party sounds like a bright idea.

Get some COLOR this Friday at The Milky Way, 405 Centre St., Jamaica Plain. Doors open at 9 p.m. $5, 21+. Keep up with Colbourne at www.myspace.com/colorstreet.
