Dyke Night at Toast is toast

Michael Wood READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Dyke Night at Toast Lounge, to which lesbians and their friends have flocked for dancing and drinks every Friday since 2005 - a lifetime in lesbian club years - is coming to an end on April 25.

Kristen Porter, founder and owner of Dyke Night Productions, said the end of the Toast residency is the result of the Somerville nightspot's transition into a full-service restaurant with a full-time chef. "We were given notice that our last night will be at the end of April," she said.

Porter is currently shopping for another venue to host Dyke Night. "At this point I don't have anything permanent secured," she said. But fear not, ladies; in the interim, said Porter, "Dyke Night will be doing special one-time-only events at various venues in hopes to find another permanent home."

In the meantime, Porter is plotting a blowout for the final Friday, at which folks will have a chance to toast the good dyke times at Toast. She wants the lesbian community, which often laments the "here today, gone tomorrow" nature of women's bar nights, to know that, "it's not only possible to have a very successful long-term relationship for a lesbian night at a venue but also that it's possible to have a good end to that relationship that provides closure to the community." Ah, spoken like a true lesbian.

Porter promises food, performance and a little something special for the singles and the couples at the event, which is being planned in collaboration with the group Mad Femme Pride. The Dyke Night staff is also putting together a performance, which means partygoers can see the famously behind-the-scenes, introverted Porter take the stage for once. "We're working on some numbers," Porter confesses. "That's what I've been talked into."

That alone should be worth the price of admission. "Well," Porter laughs, "I don't know about that."
