QWOC+ Boston--a volunteer-run, multicultural social group for LGBTQ women and transpeople of color (and friends)--is sponsoring a series of multicultural events through August 9, including art exhibits, public discussions, spoken word performances, and film screenings, in celebration of the second annual Queer Women of Color (QWOC) Week.

"We want to celebrate who we are and create connections," said Adaora Asala, one of QWOC+ Boston's founding organizers. She said, "while we are a part of the the larger community...we can't just be lumped in with the big gay pride events. We also need a truly diverse social space specifically for LGBTQ women of color."

The grassroots group is known for their quarterly social events and programs, and their collaboration with other local organizations. QWOC Week is gaining popularity and status as a multicultural pride festival. This year's theme is "Diversity Speaks."

QWOC+ Boston partnered with DykeNight Productions, SHE Entertainment, Men of Color Creating Change, and Boston Gay Women's Group, among others, to produce the week's kick-off Boat Cruise event on August 2. Asala called the multi-group collaboration "phenomenal," saying it is a "testament to what the week is going to be doing."

Visit QWOC's website (www.qwocboston.org) for more information and the week's schedule of events.
